Sinden January Mix

I've been going mix happy recently, but I'm sure no one is complaining! I don't know what it is, but this time of year seems to have brought out the best in DJ and producers for mixes. It's kinda typical that this coincides with the fact that I'm probably busiest at this time of month, but we can't leave you guys empty handed, so here's Grizzly label boss Sinden's January mix!

An eclectic selection of everything new to come from Grizzly, such as new collaboration from the man himself and SBTRKT, new tracks from Dr Gonzo (Crookers and Savage Skulls), to 3Ball Guarachero straight from Mexico.

Medling with Melé

There's a man with a CV boasting multiple EP releases, Radio 1 guests mixes for Toddla T and massive support from an array of artists. Hence, there's no wondering why everyone in the business is tipping Krissy Peers, better known as Melé for big things. Playing checkers with the top at only 18, this young prodigy puts out every kind of genre from House, Electro, Grime or UK Garage. Our Manchester based broheim, Leo, managed to catch a moment of his time to get the latest.

Can you explain Melé's sound in 3 words.
I-don't-know.

At only 18, your already mustering up some of the freshest tracks to grace our ears. Where did it all start for you?
I started producing about 3 or 4 years ago. Seriously for about a year & a half though.

What else would you say helped you get seen? Other than some pretty impressive productions. What artists gave you you initial break through?
Sinden has really helped me out from the beginning of the whole mele thing which is cool. but also guys like l-vis 1990 & herve have helped me along the way.

With huge numbers of artists cueing up to get you on remix duties, the brand new release of your 'Bombay EP' on Mixpak Records and upcoming releases on Sindens groundbreaking 'Grizzly' label and Herve's 'Cheap Thrills', 2010 is shaping up to being a pretty busy year!What else have you got in the pipeline that we can look forward to?
I've just finished a track for a compilation Enchufada are doing called "Hard Ass Sessions", which is basically some artist's having a go at making a kuduro influenced track, really cool idea. Other than that a remix for Greenmoney which will be coming out on A-trak's Fools Gold. that about it really, I'm just seeing where things take me!

I look forward to hearing your take on Kuduro! For your remix on the Greenmoney EP, who were you approached by at Fools Gold? Was it A-Trak himself?
Nope it wasnt, i had been chatting to the greenmoney guys for a while & they had been saying they wanted me to remix this track with mz bratt they had for a long time before it was signed to fools gold. so fools gold was just a big bonus i suppose!

Definitely! How does it feel receiving support from the likes of A-Trak, Sinden and Brodinski, to name a few, so early on in your career?
It's really cool that all these guy's like my tracks, also a bit surreal at the same time.

Do you reckon this put a lot of added pressure on you whilst making your productions?
Not really, its made me more confident if anything.

Would you ever consider doing a collaboration? If so who would you like to work with?
Yeah I would love to. I don't think it work's when people just do collab's for the sake of them though, I would to work with MIA one day!

Who's/what your biggest musical influence?
Liam Howlett for sure.

Any artists your strongly backing for big things this year?
Brey on an experimental tip is doing some really cool stuff. I may be starting a label with him end of this year but that's early days. Google his terror danjah remix!

What are your opinion on blogs? Do they help the music scene develop and move forward or are they a hindrance?
yeah definitely they are cool. they can help break you to people who may not have heard of you before, i know they have helped me a bit.

Where Did Your Name Come From?
In about September last year my stuff was just starting to get recognized. I was producing under a different name (which was crap & I'm not going to share it) & i remember l-vis 1990 just told me one day that i needed to change it. I thought Mele sounded alright so i went with it.

What's your favourite fruit?
Orange, although i am not a fruit eater.

What's been the biggest highlight for Mele so far? Any particular set you've played or proud moment you want to share?
there hasnt been 1 big highlight really. playing chibuku in liverpool a few weeks back will always stick with me i think, it was one of them really spontaneous things, but pretty amazing!

The Future.

You'd be looking at an oracle pretty weird if she was trying to tell you that a Jamaican, lazer-armed commando screaming shit like 'Guns Don't Kill People, Lazers Do', would be at the forefront of our scene come 2009. Turns out that's exactly what Diplo & Switch have conjured up as their latest alterego in 'Major Lazer' and let this post be a tribute to just how well its working for them. We're not going to try and give simultanious run-downs on explosive and huge names like Diplo and Switch, so we'll break things up a little then bring it all back together when the romance starts between to two.

Diplo started off life illin' in Trinidad & Tobago and since then he can claim his name to the rushes and thrills of high school teaching, desk work and of course, being one of the most respected electronic artists in the world. His sound would be the definition of diversity, or thereabouts, as he spans hip-hop, tribal house, funked up garage and dubstep - all with ease. He can claim to be a very prominant figure in setting up the huge smash hit 'Paper Plans' by the well nurtured up-n-comer, M.I.A. We could go into all the artists and record labels the Diplo name has splattered itself across, but f%c@ that - let's just say its very, very impressive! He's sitting on the back of his 'Hey!' release, done in collaboration with Laidback Luke. It's got that ML feel and the remix pack makes the EP look like the who's who of the scene at the moment, so jump out and grab it (this link here works just fine). Check this coool Crooker's mash up in the mean time, giving a whole new take on La Roux's tune, all thanks to our friends at Squeegie.

Well I guess that leaves us with Switch. It's hard to write anothing short of a biography when it comes to this man, but if we try and keep it plain and simple, he's a UK DJ who re-invented pretty much everything we know today. His collaborations sprawl out like endless webs and there wouldn't be a knowledgle music guru out there who didn't respect the lad and if there was, we wouldn't care to hear from him. We feel embarrased to suggest you still don't know the name at this point, but just incase, you may be more familiar with his work alongside Sinden of which multiple tracks hit big time status. Here's a warmer for you, it spell's diversity and compliments Switch's sound to perfection, especially with those amazing, soothing Santigold vocals - SUMMER! We won't lie, its different, but make sure you go thank the guys at !Tashed.

And there you have it folks, thats the individual breakdown on both halves of the biggest collaboration in the dance world at the moment. Err, so what happens when you put them together? I'd say its the biggest, loudest, tear-down, bash bushin party you'll ever go to. You've got wild childs smashing down on bongo drums, hippy's abusing flutes and deadset ravers swooshing their pants over the barked up dance floor. It gets crazy sometimes, but hell, its all working for them.

Contrary to popular beleif, they have been around for awhile but its safe to say 2009 is their scheduled skyrocket. Not only are they fresh off their 'Guns Dont Kill People, Lazers Do' album release, the two are nominated for a MTV Video Music award for their killer clip behind the even better tune ''Hold The Line" (place your vote HERE, they have to win!). It's definatly worth a peek, the video is just up there a bit, see it? Anyway, the guys are just ripping parties apart, getting scrutinized for apparently stealing 'cultural' sounds and dropping tune after tune, collab after collab. If you don't know who they are by now, let this tune courtesy of Rakkatta get you going, and before you bitch that technically its got more to do with Laidback Luke than Major Lazer, he really didn't do that much to change it. Probably because ML got it so damn right.
