FJ004 - LEE MORTIMER!

Cemented as one of the biggest names in the dance music industry, Lee Mortimer is a multi-talented DJ from the UK. His talents span realms of production, running record labels, rocking crowds and managing some of the best artists in the world. We don't know how he got so good, so we spent 15 minutes on the phone with him to find out!

FJ: How do you find working with another artist given all the collaborative work you do?
I really enjoy it. Its not something I expected to do to begin with. I mean the first track I did was with Foamo and I think neither of us had done a track together so it was kinda’ new ground, but what came out was really good. After that I did the one with Laidback Luke, that was incredibly quick to do! We kinda did that in about six hours.

Yeh, we have heard Luke does his tracks very quickly?
Yeah, he really does. I mean it can take me anywhere between a day and a week to make a track sometimes i go back and forth to it but um yer he's really quick in the studio, just sort of no nonsense sort of just lays the track down really quick and ends up usually really good.

What does it take for someone to jump off the page and make you want to collaborate with them?
Umm I think we both have to be into similar kind of music. I actually played a lot of Laidback Luke's tracks and he always reacted really well to the tracks that I sent him from my label. You have to have the same kind of mentality, both be into kinda big tunes, you know big rooms.

Who have you most enjoyed collaborating with?
Probably "Luke" id say, because its probably the biggest track ive done, and the fact it was so quick, it was a new way of working for me. In terms of ‘Blau’, I remember hearing Crookers playing it like last Summer at a festival over here, called Creamfields. That was the first time id heard someone else playing it "out" and I managed to get a video of it, and this was way before it was released so i don't think anyone would've really known what it was at that point. The crowd just went crazy and I think it was at that point I realised "this is a pretty big tune". Even after it was released it was still gradually growing from there you know I had people like Tiesto playing it maybe two weeks after it got released.

Plenty of satisfaction in that?
Yeah for sure! Especially someone like Tiesto playing it and Crookers you know obviously very different styles in music. It really did manage to cross a number of different genres.

Agreed! They are both very different demographics too. For yourself Lee, what do you look for when your making a track? Has it changed much?
When I am making a track I don't exactly start off with a specific idea i just sit down and play around with it, I really just try and make big tunes that will have a big reaction on the dance floor  really. I am not really to subtle about anything. Sort of big and in your face. In terms of change… it’s changed a little a bit. Tracks have been getting bigger and more in your face and more of a bigger sound. Then again a few producers have gone more a ‘housey’ route as well so I think its more diverse in some ways.

Do you think that may have to do with the fact that the sets your playing, and the places your playing are a lot different now, opposed to when you first started out?
Yeah true, I mean you get to a point where you start playing at peak times and obviously the tunes your playing are bigger tracks and that reflects when you go back and make bigger tracks then you did when you sorta started out, and like I’m a resident at a club where I live up here in Oxford, and I've been going there for like ten years. Started off as a warm up dj so you kinda buy that sort of music until your higher on the bill.

Does running a label take away from DJing?
To be honest it all goes hand in hand, I mean running a label does take up a lot of time, like finding new artists, listening to demo's and things. It’s great to discover new music, being sent tunes from all corners of the world, you know i signed a track from a guy in New Zealand and then people in Budepest and then Italy.

You and Foamo have been taking the Superman release all around the UK lately, how has that been going?
Ha! Yeah we've been kinda getting the superman costume's out and Dj'ing. It’s been great! We have really had a lot of gigs off the back of that release so i really do think that's the biggest thing to happen on the label so far

I bet! How have the crowds been reacting when they see two massive acts throwing down a VS set?
Yeah its been getting great reaction. We are pretty similar as we are so we really DJ well together, and I really look forward to playing those gigs, Its really good fun. Its not something I've really done before, playing back to back with someone, but the more you do it, the more in tune you get. They are always great parties and the crowd are always up for it!

Nice! Well Lee, tell us your thoughts on Aussie crowds?
They are really up for it in Australia! But probably not to different to be honest, I mean anywhere you go in the world they are all into pretty much the same music and seem to attract the same sorta crowds. You look around and there are people from all around the world in every city anyway. Its just great to be able to see that and to play to all these people, but the Aussie crowds are definitely up for it!

Do you differ your sets depending on location?
I kinda think if I am booked to play somewhere, they are probably aware of my music already. I just try and do what i usually do. No two places are the same and no two crowds are exactly the same. You know, no two sets will be exactly the same. I would never have something in the back of my mind saying "I’m playing in Australia I better play this tune" I just stick to what I know and that's the crowds are expecting I suppose.

Name a stand out memory of your career!
Id say the Glastonberry last year, I was playing on a stage that looked like something out of the film Mad Max, it had like junk net all around and I was 15M in the air, I was playing in this kind of crows nest,  and the whole stage around was filled with like performers and there was big flames coming out of everywhere. As I said it was really high up and there was about 5000 people dancing, and ill never forget looking down over that crowd just thinking it was unbelievable. That's something I will never forget

Amazing! What can we expect from "Lee Mortimer" for the rest of the year? Big plans?
LM: Yeah, got a couple of tracks coming out on a Belgian label called "youboot" which should be out in a couple of months. I think the remixes are getting done for those right now. I’ve also been working on a track with a reggae sound system called "Saxon Sound System".  It has a big reggae influence on this track, still my usual sound but it goes into a reggae section. The guys do something they call "speed rapping" they are rapping but it just keeps getting faster and faster and it sounded amazing so I thought I had to work with these guys! We are going to be promo’ing this over the summer so hopefully this can be a big summer tune!

Wow! what was the influence to do a reggae style tune?
Umm I just heard these guys on a Youtube video. My Manager sent me a link and the way they where rapping was just unbelievable. I mean they go back along way, back to the 80's, and they have been sampled more then, say James Brown I reckon. I mean their vocals are on so many old jungle tracks, but when we approached them to work with them, they where actually really happy we approached them sorta legitimately, instead of just sampling them. They where really up for doing it, and they kinda just said "you do what you want with it" I sent them an instrumental  demo and then they rapped over it. We got it into the studio and I am really happy with outcome.

FJ: Looking forward to that one! So what’s happening with Warehouse for the rest of the year?
LM: Yeah well the schedule is pretty full on for the rest of the year now. Something coming out from a new artist called Nemo, disco trash music, a guy called Youx from New Zealand which is around your kind of neck of the woods. Also a guy called Kill Light which I'm really into at the moment, and then a guy called Jay Robinson aswell! Those are the things coming up to look forward to!

Thanks so much for your time Lee, and we look forward to your tour down here!
Cheers guys!

RANDOM!

Wow. We haven't posted in two days so let's get straight into it before our email inbox explodes.

We don't know anything about this guy but he's got a solid jackin' sound and he picked a couple of pretty cool tunes to remix. In our opinion he's done really well, even if some argue that the sound is starting to pass. Who are we to say though - good work Mick Mitias (bonus track below).

If your feeling a little dubstep then you should really get on this. It's Jeuce's rework of the very popular 'Remedy' tune by the famed Crookers, also featuring Mike Snow. For a tad bit of background, Jeuce are an electro/dubstep act based out of Leeds in the UK who have recently received airplay on Radio 1 - need we say more? They are on the way up so catch 'em sooner rather than later! (bonus track from Jeuce below)

First up we've got a new track from Radaza, a highly versatile local DJ who's got what many want when it comes to late night musical capabilities. Playing everything from electro and hip-hop to breaks and trance, he somehow managers to find extra time to spearhead promotional efforts for a number of well known companies and even sit atop Boomstar Loco - a group most of you will know a fair bit about. Here's a breaks offering from the man himself, see what you think and hit him up with praise!

BONUS:

Yay.

Creepy Crookers!

I am now writing for The Arcade Creative in addition to the wonderful fridge. While you won't be able to grab my posts anywhere but on their freshly launched site, you loyal and hungry readers deserve the audible goodness. So here's the track, but click HERE to see what I said about it :) Oh and by the way, 'Transilvania' is definitely something different.

Black Noise remix Crookers!
With one superbly received EP (Southern Fried Records) and remixes for Trevor Loveys & Sinden, Young Punx, Crookers, Tonka, Laidback Luke & Diplo, the South-Coast based trio Black Noise have pricked some serious interest in recent months and with their next EP close, it seems there’s much more to come.

Southern Fried Records have just authorised the release of their massive remix of Crookers, wobbly bass in full effect, as "Business Man" feat Wiley & Thomas Jules gets some serious treatment! Alongside the awesome Crookers remix attached, check out the mental bit of audiovisual entertainment above (the clip for one of the original tracks on the 'EP2' release) and grab the Black Noise 'Slash N Burn' (October 2009) mix!

B.Rich Dubstep!
Florida MC 'BC' (The Black Child?) has just dropped his debut solo conceptual album 'Time Capsule: Part 1' and is breaking and spitting out some serious waves. The release is all thanks to Peripheral Records and to keep the fun going they have given Fridgejet favorite B.Rich permission to release his dubstep take on 'This Is Not A Song'. He's proved to us time and time again that you can't expect anything short of amazing when you nab one of his tunes and we promise this is no exception. We suggest you grab the remix quickly, check out 'Time Capsule: Part 1' right here and shoot props over to BC for kicking things off with a bang!

 Timoshii and Dopefish
It feels like forever since we have talked about this UK DJ and producer, but maybe that's just because we talk about him a hell of a lot. Consider this segment merely touching base, with a more comprehensive write up on his latest EP coming out next week for all to enjoy. The purpose of this post? To give you all a streamable Timoshii treat coming in the form of his remix for Dopefish, which dropped on Beatport yesterday. Check it out and nab the tune here if you like!

Dopefish - Common Loon (Timoshii Remix)

Be sure to check back constantly for our massive write up on Timoshii's huge new EP 'Top One' out very soon on Beatport and worth all the little pennys.

Digging Nu-Skool Breaks?
OG (Owain Griffiths) is a Manchester based producer and DJ with a long running show on NuSkoolBreaks Radio and previous remixes of Emmet, Roots Manuva and even Biggie Smalls under his belt. His new EP "Bubbling" is chock full of grimy bass, tight rhythms and a spacey vibe, out tomorrow on Midnight Minus Two.

Midnight Minus Two have thrown a streamable EP and a full EP giveaway for anyone who's up for the description entailed above. If you like what you hear, be sure to do the responsible thing and nab the EP right here. If not, give Owain some feedback on his Myspace right here!

The Future.

You'd be looking at an oracle pretty weird if she was trying to tell you that a Jamaican, lazer-armed commando screaming shit like 'Guns Don't Kill People, Lazers Do', would be at the forefront of our scene come 2009. Turns out that's exactly what Diplo & Switch have conjured up as their latest alterego in 'Major Lazer' and let this post be a tribute to just how well its working for them. We're not going to try and give simultanious run-downs on explosive and huge names like Diplo and Switch, so we'll break things up a little then bring it all back together when the romance starts between to two.

Diplo started off life illin' in Trinidad & Tobago and since then he can claim his name to the rushes and thrills of high school teaching, desk work and of course, being one of the most respected electronic artists in the world. His sound would be the definition of diversity, or thereabouts, as he spans hip-hop, tribal house, funked up garage and dubstep - all with ease. He can claim to be a very prominant figure in setting up the huge smash hit 'Paper Plans' by the well nurtured up-n-comer,
M.I.A. We could go into all the artists and record labels the Diplo name has splattered itself across, but f%c@ that - let's just say its very, very impressive! He's sitting on the back of his 'Hey!' release, done in collaboration with Laidback Luke. It's got that ML feel and the remix pack makes the EP look like the who's who of the scene at the moment, so jump out and grab it (this link here works just fine). Check this coool Crooker's mash up in the mean time, giving a whole new take on La Roux's tune, all thanks to our friends at Squeegie.

Well I guess that leaves us with Switch. It's hard to write anothing short of a biography when it comes to this man, but if we try and keep it plain and simple, he's a UK DJ who re-invented pretty much everything we know today. His collaborations sprawl out like endless webs and there wouldn't be a knowledgle music guru out there who didn't respect the lad and if there was, we wouldn't care to hear from him. We feel embarrased to suggest you still don't know the name at this point, but just incase, you may be more familiar with his work alongside Sinden of which multiple tracks hit big time status. Here's a warmer for you, it spell's diversity and compliments Switch's sound to perfection, especially with those amazing, soothing Santigold vocals - SUMMER! We won't lie, its different, but make sure you go thank the guys at !Tashed.

Santigold - You'll Find A Way (Switch and Graeme Sinden Remix)

And there you have it folks, thats the individual breakdown on both halves of the biggest collaboration in the dance world at the moment. Err, so what happens when you put them together? I'd say its the biggest, loudest, tear-down, bash bushin party you'll ever go to. You've got wild childs smashing down on bongo drums, hippy's abusing flutes and deadset ravers swooshing their pants over the barked up dance floor. It gets crazy sometimes, but hell, its all working for them.

Contrary to popular beleif, they have been around for awhile but its safe to say 2009 is their scheduled skyrocket. Not only are they fresh off their 'Guns Dont Kill People, Lazers Do' album release, the two are nominated for a MTV Video Music award for their killer clip behind the even better tune ''Hold The Line" (place your vote HERE, they have to win!). It's definatly worth a peek, the video is just up there a bit, see it? Anyway, the guys are just ripping parties apart, getting scrutinized for apparently stealing 'cultural' sounds and dropping tune after tune, collab after collab. If you don't know who they are by now, let this tune courtesy of Rakkatta get you going, and before you bitch that technically its got more to do with Laidback Luke than Major Lazer, he really didn't do that much to change it. Probably because ML got it so damn right.

Apparently Dub be Good

There's no denying the fact that evolution and progression spell change, so its to no suprise that a few years after 'fidget' burst up the scene and took over there's a new genre in town. Dubstep has started to creep in, and lets face it - it's a whole new ball game. Described as 'encorporating grime into 2-step garage sound', the latest craze hits bass levels harder and longer than its predecessors and wields its hands to the underground. While it may be a pain in the ass to dance to, its got some of the hardest hitting producers out there twisting the style into fame. Rusko and Benga have been throwing their stuff in the scene for years and have amassed loads of support internationally - but perhaps one of the most well known around this part of the world is A1 Bassline.

More About A1 Bassline Here

The mysterious young producer/DJ recognised more fame than most when his Girl Thing EP smacked out across blogs around the world and took him upwards of his expectations. In turn, he must of fully accepted the power of blogs, and kicked off his own. Since then he has released an array of free downloads to the general public - keeping everyone stimulated by his dubstep beats and banging them out more and more often. Check out a few of the downloads he has thrown up, then jump onto his blog to get the rest - might as well jump on the dubstep bandwagon hey? Just change your dancing style.

MORE Guerilla Farts

Photos by Martin Adolfsson - see link below

Simply visiting Fairtilizer to check up on what's going suddenly put me smack bang in the middle of the whirlwind that Swedish due Dada Life are currently kicking up. While the boys merely claim 'big tunes with no frills' their current production and remix work is up there with the most active boys on the scene (thats tough, considering Crookers pushed out 60+ remixes/originals in 2007). Currently, Dada Life are putting the final touches on their debut album 'Do the Dada' which will be sitting on store shelves by March 9th (which will in turn mark their immediate rise to fame). Before you go and spend your money on that, I snapped up the teams January mix which drops pressure from Malente as well as some tasty original work from the boys (oh, and check out Fairtilizer while your at it).

Martin Adolfsson (the guy who took the cool pictures!)

Anyway, they boys have been releasing 'Guerilla Fart Edits' in which they pick their favorite songs and add that lovely 'Dada' touch to it. Score to Discobelle.net, who has had the plethora of bangers all thrown their way alongside the generous lads putting them all on the Dada Life Official Website. Maybe you remember their work on Boys Noize's track 'Lava Lava' which made it into the FridgeJet monthly top 3. They are up to their 8th edit which brought in the new year, but here are the best half (in my personal opinion) - complete with the Discobelle articles!

Dada Life January Track Listing
Timelords – Doctor in Tardis (Dada Life Guerilla Fart #8) Malente – Bring That Lead Back Bird Peterson – Pete Goes Off Fukkk Offf – Rave Is King (Le Castle Vania Remix) Maskinen – Pengar Alex Kidd – Rockin Down (Dirty Mix) Lazy Jay – Float My Boat Sharooz – Get Off (Miles Dyson Remix) Mustard Pimp – Oh La La Satan Chuckie – Let The Bass Kick Super Viral Brothers – Back In The Swamp Tiga – Mind Dimension 2 Dada Life – Rubber Band Boogie Tim Healey feat TC – Out Of Control (Pablo Decoder Superior Mix) Dj Mujava – Township Funk (Sinden Remix) Siriusmo – Too Simple

Ouch?

The Crookers in Sydney - bad crowd surfing attempt.

Christmas Cheer (A year late)

While I feel like a bit of a fool throwing a track up with a modified date of 30.12.07 onto Fridge Jet, the relatively late arrival is defiantly worth a listen (perhaps in a more comical nature).
Turns out late last december Bob Rifo (Bloody Beetroots) and Phra (Crookers) hit the drinks then stumbled towards the decks and produced a 'DrunkenBathroomMix' which is a tasty little mix-tape considering the boys probably couldn't see the pitch control. While I doubt the 'Bloody Crookers' will release anything else anytime soon, its a good time warp to hear the songs these two super-giants were twisting out a year ago (and its not like they don't enjoy playing together!). Pay it a listen and visit the boys sites!

Born With a Potty Mouth!

Potty Mouth Records - 'nuff said? Well, with the Chicago based production crew currently swimming in DJ talent, it seems overly appropriate to kick of the posts with a few of their always pleasant offerings. With signings like Hijack (UK), Santiago & Bushido (Chicago) and my personal favorites, The Crookers (Italy), Potty Mouth records have established themselves as one of the best alternative dance labels around. With Jesse Rose (aka Switch) noted for a significant amount of their inspiration, its obvious the boys in Chicago work well hand in hand with the Crookers alongside the many other fidgety DJ's Potty Mouth Records have surrounding them.

While the Potty Mouth signings defiantly don't lack any depth, Crookers could be seen as the more significant source of 'star power' amongst the DJ line-up, which is the reason why its so easy to find the latest Crookers track. While trying not to follow the trend, the latest Crookers mix is defiantly worth a mention, proving they still have world class flare. Their mix of Enjoy, is an upbeat, Crookers feeling song that has all the charm of their old ones and with the Crookers playing at the upcoming Stereosonic festival, Brisbane fans have a lot to be excited about. The Crookers Essential Mix (June 2008) consists of a huge (almost two hours!) set that comes with it all the reasons you love the Crookers and is currently available via Potty Mouth Records.

Outhere Brothers - Enjoy (Crookers Remix)

In my opinion, Potty Mouth records struck well with their signing of resident Sydney DJ, Adam Bozzetto. With his electro, fidgety style and connections within the fashion industry, Bozzetto finds himself with three residencies and a fan base expanding quicker than the lines outside the clubs he's playing in. Bozzetto released a three track EP with Potty Mouth, showcasing 'I Cant Go' (Original plus remix by Scott Cooper) and 'Disco', two equally catchy club tracks that will defiantly be the tracks you skip back too on your I-pod for some time to come. Be sure to check out his August 2008 mix (Available from Potty Mouth) and visit his myspace or beatport for information and tracks.
