Monastery Monthly

For those who place an emphasis on quality music and killer crowds during their late night ventures, Monastery Nightclub has established itself as the premier light-in-the-dark about Brisbane's valley precinct. Why? Because they sure do know how to book. Proof? Here's whats coming up!

NEW YEARS DAY @ MONASTERY
feat CLAUDE VON STROKE

Monastery Nightclub proudly presents Claude VonStroke on the first night of 2010. Come and celebrate the New year with a special 3 hour extended set from the big boss of Dirtybird records and a 12 hour party starting at 5pm!! One night in San Francisco after a long night of partying, Barclay and his friends began to make up fake European DJ names. Just kidding around, Barclay came up with “ClaudeVonStroke.” It ended up sticking after someone at the party booked him to DJ and used the new moniker on the flyer. The rest is history, up until now that is, so get on board and combat your hangover with the very cause come NYD 2010!

CHECK OUT HIS TUNES HERE (hypem.com)

Local line up: Danny T, Wongo, Habebe, Aniki, Dominic James, Noy, Killafornia, Jmac, Fingajigg and Chappo. Doors Open @ 5pm, January 1st 2010.

MOWGLI (UK/DEADFISH) @ MONASTERY
Friday Jan 15th, 2010.

After the huge success of his London to Paris ep and with support from Danny T, Habebe, Killafornia, Fingajigg and Jmac, this show is definitely one to mark in the calendar for the start of the new year. Don't beleive us? Listen to what these heavyweights have to say about the UK phenomenon!

★ BRODINSKI: WOAH this is fucking NUTZ!
★ NOOB: BOMMMB, I love it! Thanks a lot
★ JAYMO: Mowgli, Solo, Riva and the crew are on fire right now. London to Paris is the one for me - love that sample, love that perc, love that riser.... Love. That. Track.
★ DAVE NADA: Mowgli has one of the best sounds in dance music right now, period. So much style and sonically on top of his game.
★ EDU K: OMG!! Mowgli is THE master!
★ JAIMIE FANATIC: sick release! But that's what you can expect from Mr. Mowgli.
★ RIVA STARR: London to Paris is goood!
★ STEVE AOKI: I like it!!
★ SINDEN: London to Paris, will play this weekend when I travel from London to Paris. Its got that funk!

SOUNDS GOOD!

Fingajigg Fun

Still stirring up killer mixes in the depths of Monastery, Birdee's and other premium joints around town, the duo that is Fingajigg haven't stopped making waves since they broke the scene. Showing their capabilities spread much further than mixing up a storm, the guys have just shot out a nice little bootleg for the fans to enjoy and its definitely worth the download. Expect a nice snapshot of the sound they have going on at the moment, but if you want a bit more (you will) we suggest snapping up the mix tape too. Furthermore you can thank the boys at the links provided and watch them do their thing when they support Santiago & Bushido @ Monastery this Friday night!

Noy's The Man!

From juggling a plethora of sets, spinning consistantly good mixtapes and getting huge rowdy crowds sweating till the early hours of the morning - NOY sounds like a god damn circus on paper. We all know the friendly guy and he's got a ripper following in Brisbane, consistently found pulling tracks from his sleeves in the bass-ridden labyrinth that is Monastery. We won't rave on about the fact that it's one of our favorite clubs, but the place has got the best residents in Brisbane (that was not a referral to any standings in the 'ITM Top 50 Popularity Contest', but I guess they are just straight up cool cats? Speaking of which, NOY has his feature night there tomorrow, in which he personally promises to bring all the madness from under the big top, channel it through the monitor speakers and smack the crowd around for what will be a HUGE and unpleasant experience... come the next morning. If you just can't wait to hear whats in store for you, he's just dropped a 2 part mixtape series (work yourself up on the first, chill out on the second), a fitting placement for the commute two and from work before you check him tomorrow night!

Wobble Wobble

JC EDIT is still stepping up his game when it comes to original production work, with his latest effort twisting his style a touch to add that wobble everyone loves. Just off the back of playing alongside Jesse Rose and Oliver $, JC is fronting up to Mono this thursday night alongside the very famed Zombie Disco Squad - so there's your chance to check him out!

J-J-J-JMAC and THE DON!

The always creative and original Monastery resident JMAC has just thrown a fresh mix together in time for his appearance this Friday alongside Don Rimini. I was probably meant to write 'Let Me Back Up' in brackets after that so everyone who doesn't have a clue gets one about who he is, but let us tell you, he is big. Anyway, JMAC has slotted into his residency at Monastery perfectly and can always be found banging out his fresh style behind the decks, with this mixtape been a perfect tangible example of why its worth getting in there and checking him out. He's just as good as all the other INSANE Monastery residents! While your at it, get a taste of the main set this Friday and snap up Don's May 09 mixtape, fresh off the decks! See you at Don Rimini.

Better Late Than Never..?

While his latest mix tape effort did hit the speakers of all the scenester's around Brisbane a week ago, Noy knows as well as I do... Uni work sucks. Anyway (better late than never), Noy just wrapped up 'Making Mischeif' which turns out to be the first part of a two-section mixtape. It encorporates a bunch of songs you'll know and drops hits both new and old - all in typical Noy Boy style. Snap this one up as a warmer for the sort of tunes he'll be spitting out when he supports Zombie Disco Squad @ Monastery on May 21st.

Dubsteppin' Diva

The terrorising, bass weilding and wonk splattering man we all know as Danny T is back at again, this time layering his fresh all over 'Diva'... yes, the one your thinking of. The Brissy local must have concluded there just wasn't enough edge on the original and spiced things up a little, dubstep style. If you haven't kept in the loop, Danny has had a string of success with a never ending line up of gigs that has him skipping from venues like the depths of Monastery (our personal favorite) to commercialised super-clubs like The Met, all in one night! Alongside kicking it in the valley for the latter part of every week, Beatport have provided a home for his increasingly polished production efforts - giving the man some wider spread recognition. Snap up the tune ASAP, jump on his Facebook and Myspace and buy a tune or two off Beatport, now.

HUGGEE!

Potty Mouth Records, for those of you who haven't heard us rave about them time and time before, are a collective of (in our opinion) the best artist in the world. The likes of Santiago & Bushido, Electric Soulside, Kelevra, Chris James & Lee Dearn and Australia's very own Adam Bozzetto all hold residency with the label - making it one of the most recognised music labels in the world. Further more, they have decided to send two of their troopers into battle at the Monastery this Friday (3rd of April) and it turns out its none other than Adam Bozzetto (SYD) and Chris James (UK). With Bozzetto banging out a string of highly successful remixes and original efforts, he's become quite the popular guy around town these days, headlining WHAM! and popping his name up at a wide array of national and international gigs. Always the nice guy, he happily sent through two tracks, an original (post-release) and remix (pre-release) just to make sure everyone had a fair idea of why they HAVE to make the trek into Monastery come friday evening. Check the tracks out, and head down to read a little on Chris James!

Never the one to dissapoint, Chris James too has had is fair share of success, tearing around the globe and prepping up for his Australian debut this friday. Having developed a very succesful relationship with Lee Dearn, his production efforts have seen him skyrocket upwards. You all would of heard Torcida Cumbia (and the very impressive Mightyfools remix) and his other work does not fall short. Check the tape, and jump the link to head over to the 'In Robots we Trust' Blog to snap up a track of his, just to see what all the fuss is about!

Big, Black Friday

Danny T and Fingajigg - two good reasons to get to Monastery this friday the 13th!

Skip an introduction to this wild child, all you need to know is that Danny T will be dropping those wonky wobblers this friday night at Monastery for the best 'Black Friday' celebrations in town. Jump down in your scary attire, walk in for free and enjoy the cheap drinks all night. On top of all this, Ray Antonelli, JMAC and Habebe will be kicking their stuff on until the sun comes up. Sounds like a good night!

Fingajigg (for those of you who don't know) started as two separate stories, each of equal value. Tim Plunkett showed his stuff at the Central DJ comp and took out honors, while his partner in crime Jason Haskell was over at Hotel LA blowing the roof of their comp. Turns out they were pretty good together, given that not long after the pair teamed up to become the duo that now holds residency in the depths of the dirtiest dungeon in town (and our favorite), Monastery Nightclub. Alongside names like Danny T and Killafornia, the boys work their stuff to their ever growing fan base, also keeping themselves busy by dropping in at Basement 388, Planet Nightclub and Barsoma. So know that you know, snap up the set and watch them do their shit live this friday at Monastery!

Hard to Beat ! !

Dirtiest, filthiest beats in brisbane? Check.
The best residents in Brisbane? Check.
International guest superstar? Check.

To be honest, Danny T and Killafornia float our boat week in week out, but sure, if Monastery is willing to fork out some extra dough to get international superstar DJ/producer Alex Schmitz in for a night, WHY NOT? The UK resident drops everything from fidget to rave bangers and is honored by the Brisbane community as one of the best producers abroad. He arrives in Brisbane with a plethora of international recognition and without a doubt plans to rock the roof off the Monastery into the wee hours of the morning. Pretty much, your an idiot if you miss it. Check his shit now and come say Hi to the crew at Monastery this weekend.

BENIBEE (GPO) + JMAC (MONO)

'Say Hello' to the 'Newest Kids on the Block' !

Showcasing some fresh names on the scene this week is pretty hard to avoid when the quality of offerings rival that of the more established crew. Benibee dropped his shit at GPO's young gun feature night a few weeks back and since then his name has popped up in the infamous 'Fuck Fluro' nights that tear Fridays@GPO apart on regular intervals. His music selection is good, and seem's to breach some of the constraints of genre definition - suggesting a well rounded mindset for the Brisbane young gun. Check him out next at 'Fuck Fluro' (Click here to see the event page).

Walk down the street and around the corner and you will stumble across some equally fresh talent lurking in the depths of Monastery. JMAC got snapped up by the home of dirty beats for the most part of the 2009 year and without having any first hand experience with the guy, his mixtape does plenty of talking. To be honest but, if your a resident alongside the likes of Killafornia and Danny T, you have to be doing a lot right. Jump his links and be sure to see him on the 28th of March when he boasts his feature night at the home of dirty, Monastery!

Friendly Reminder...

Yep, Friday's going to be big. Two of Fridge Jet's favorites packed into the dungeon that is Monastery - how could it not be? This post is nothing but an excuse to get the crowds into what will be one hell of a night! The list below contains every track Killafornia and Danny T have ever put in 'The Fridge', which in turn holds everything you need to get into the mood to see the two tear it up this Friday (get your ghetto on for half price entry). See you there!

Monthly Monastery Mixes!

Killafornia just dropped the first installment of what's set to be a ripper mixtape series via the house of filthy beats, Monastery. The club is known to twist out all things dirty - jacking fidget with all the best at their 'Dirty Thursdays' week in week out. The mixtape drops heavy players like WoNK and Calvertron and still manages to rep Brisbane via 'Ear Saw', the Jordan Naumov original. Best thing but? It's all done via the increasingly threatening skills of Killafornia, one of the best Brisbane has to offer! Get this mixtape fast, check back for the next one and drop into Monastery asap to see Killafornia do it live!

NOY BOY! (a bit late)

He's fresh on the scene and his schedules filling quicker than the clubs he's playing at, but here it is, Noy's twisted out another killer mixtape. Incase you have had trouble finding Noy, he's generally alongside Brisbane's best somewhere in the depths of Monastery or supporting a monster international act in one of his many guest slots. Yeh, the Brisbane resident definitely has enough time to practice. The mixtapes impressive, going from a plethora of high hats to the depths of Foamo's remix of 'Half In Love with Elizabeth'. Check out his Myspace and see him at Monastery this Thursday and Saturday night (along with all the others).

Keeping With Mixtape Fever

Turns out Killafornia has been working his stuff out too having just polished off his latest mixtape, 'Jackin It'. Great mixes and a killer song selection make it much of the same for the local boy, proving why he's playing week in, week out at Brisbane's best clubs. Click the 'Killafornia' link on the right hand side of the page to see a complete archive of what he's thrown in the fridge.

Danny T - Top Dog

While Monastery resident Danny T tells me the musics this post entails has probably already been blogged about, I say better safe than sorry. Having herd Danny T fill the dance floor at Monastery a few times now, I was eager to see what he had in the works. While he's obviously working hard, a short but worthwhile wait will be needed to see just how good the Brissy boy has become recently. But lets be honest here, Stereosonics organisers put him in a time slot only beaten by them two dudes from ahhh, errr... Italy? The Crookers or something :) Well you just can't complain with that Danny! While his twist on 'Hear Again' will sound familiar and 'Dip Dip' has plenty of Danny T style, Popcorn is a little more tech orientated but works very well. Check his shit out now so you can say you liked him before everyone did.

And for the mixtape connoisseurs, here is just one of the many great sets Danny T incorporates into Fidget Fridays at Monastery, hosting all the best fidget DJ's from Australia and abroad. I'll put the track list first because I think besides having been mixed by Danny T, its a great reason to 'Alt Click'.

1. Cactus Jack - Tom EQ Bounce mix
2. Jackin' da Garage - Natty Jack (HeavyFeet remix)
3. I Can't Go Feat. Killa B - Adam Bozzetto (Scott Cooper remix)
4. Vertigo - AC Slater (Nick Supply remix)
5. Bombaclartz - Ivan Allard (Aquilagnaja's Bouncy remix)
6. Crasher - Calvertron (Defunct remix)
7. Make Some Noise - Tom EQ
8. Chi Kaa Chi Koo - Gella (Scott Cooper remix)
9. That Banana Track - Liam Vizzle (Hijack remix)
10. Kaputt In Hollywood - Robosonic (Santiago & Bushido remix)
11. EVil Nugget - Aniki (Danny T remix)
12. Turn It Up - Wongo
13. Vouxhall - Riva Starr
14. Killa - Tom EQ & Jak Z

So, if your anything like me after listening to them three bad boys your probably pretty keen to make your way to his sets or snatch up his new tune to say your with the times. Well everyone is in luck because it looks like one of Brisbane's favorite DJ's is not taking Christmas leave:

- Danny T is playing at Good Vibrations Festival on the 21st of Feb (Gold Coast) with the likes of The Presets, Miami Horror and Deadmau5. Get tickets here!

- Danny T has a release on Beatport via the label Satan Circus. It's his remix of Evil Nugget, the Aniki produced track. Jump on the above link on December 11th and buy it.

- Danny T has two upcoming remixes on Crux Records (Yeh, its the Crux Records your thinking of) which are also due out in December on Beatport. If your wondering what track names you should be looking for on beatport later in December, here they are:

Jay Robinson - Flaming Marvelous (Danny T Remix)
Justin James Feat. Mr Eyes - Jack Wit It (Danny T Remix)

Another Trip to the Sacred

Ryan Riback dumped himself into the world of electronic music, mixing a string of catchy and upbeat songs for the likes of Afrostatic, Telmo and Scott Orlans. While Riback doesn't pump out the sort of tunes that I regularly play on my I-pod, this Melbourne DJ/producer has earnt his respect in the Australian dance scene, combining a successful combination of club appearances and original mixes with his impressive (and quite often) 're-invigorations' on other artists work. So why am I writing about Ryan Riback if he isn't my peice of cake? October 30th has Monastery playing host to the Melbourne DJ alongside Baby Gee, Luki and Dominic James and with many of you not familiar with his work, heres what's coming up. AND... with Ryan Riback rocking Dirty Thursdays at Mono only a few weeks after the Bloody Beetroots, expectations could see Riback playing above and beyond his usual. Be sure to check out his myspace and jump on Beatport - you could find $4.98 (cost of a typical EP) behind the couch!

Jack and Matt ?

If your from Brisbane and you have a night life, you probably put on your good kicks and venture into the valley sometimes. If your similar to a lot of people, the likes of GPO would be a relatively good place to reach around 1am, with you generally finding yourself there till well after lockout. Turns out its worth the expensive drinks, with two of the best up and coming Brisbane DJ's constantly rocking GPO, you will always find at least one (and sometimes two) of the energetic DJ's filling the dance floor. JCEDIT and Killafornia between them amass a number of club appearances every week, constantly supporting the best DJ's from Australia and around the world alongside doing their part in 'Fuck Fluro' and residential duties at GPO and Monastery respectively. Check out their shit, jump on their pages and see them live!

JCEDIT?
Venture into the likes of GPO on any half decent night and the chances of you finding JCEDIT, aka Jack Carter, are pretty damn high. With the general post office making up his second home, the young Brisbane resident has all the time and motivation he needs to hone his skills on the decks and keep the crowds packing in. With his ghetto originality and heavier beats, JCEDIT's mixes have that big room feel and with his own remix efforts very impressive, there is more than just killer sets to come from Jack Carter - big future?

Killafornia?
This 21 year old DJ/producers sound is described by the former as adding a bad ass twist to an already underground, 'ghetto-electric' style, a colourful and surprisingly accurate description. Once you hear Killafornia in his true form, there's no wondering why Monastery are happy to sign him up for Fidget Fridays and as a full time resident, while the likes of Empire and GPO regularly bringing him in to fill the floors. While this schedule certainly cervices as active, Killafornia still manages to break out at the Elektrik Kiss parties alongside supporting all the best DJ's when they come to town. Check his shit!!

Wait, but where did you say all this goes down? GPO Nightclub - check out the upcoming events on their website and be sure to head to one of the hectic Fuck Fluro's coming up, with the next one featuring Knife Machine (Sydney).

Monastery's Finest

A few Dirty Thursdays ago, I paid my entry to Monastery Nightclub with a smile, knowing that by 1am I would be happily watching the Bloody Beetroots smash out one of their amazing sets. Well, turns out I didn't give Danny T enough credit, with the Monastary resident using what he describes as his 'quirky funky' beats to get the whole crowd moving well earlier than i anticipated. Holding two residencies and constantly playing with the likes of Baby Gee and Luki allows the 21 year old all the time he needs to hone his hip-hop roots into perfected club beats. Blah, Blah, Blah... regarding the music - Danny T put on a fidget styled, hip-hop beat bonanza then doused the crowd with his latest mix, 'SuperCalaFreakinAwesome'. It's danny at his finest, with the track list screaming fidget! Be sure to listen to the mix, then jump on his myspace or facebook and don't miss seeing him live ASAP!

If knowing what makes Danny T click is what your after, be sure to check out the two feature articles In The Mix did on Danny, both showing that the party doesn't stop at his sets. Article One or Article Two?
