The Surecut Kids!

The Surecut Kids!

Mark our words, they have one hell of a story and they are a damn wild duo of talent. We're not going to rave and rant about the two legendary Gold Coast lads, thats what the interview is for, but we will mention that the tunes about to enter your possesion will fill top spot on your Radio/I-pod/CD Player for the duration of summer... atleast!

Amanda Blank - Might Like You Better (The Surecut Kids Remix)

Lads, lets start from the beggining. What got The Surecut Kids to where they are now? We're assuming it wasn't all prime-time, packed out shows in the early days.

Ok, well basically we are two mates who share a love for party music. We needed a way to ditch our day jobs, so for ages we just threw free parties at my place until eventually we learnt the basics of djing. We started off just playing hip hop and saved up enough coin for four turntables. These days we play everything from indie/party, to bmore, dubstep, club rap, reggae, funk, swing etc etc etc .... but its all done across four decks with a 'hip hop' style of mixing. So by that i mean its all quick-mixing, scratching, a few tricks, just kind of bringing a hip hop style to the 'house party' genres. Oh and sometimes for special events (festivals etc) we do a show with four decks and an MPC (its like a drum pad/sampler) where its basically like a 60 minute routine with lots of tricky stuff, but still in a party-rocking sense. Somewhere between a trick set and a party set.

While we are of course equally interested in the musical aspect of your response... we'd much rather hear about the famed 'Breadbox Parties'. Best story you can remember from all those crazy house years?

Ha! Wow its hard to nail it down to one... so many hazy memories! It was just a wild time of us trying to learn to DJ by throwing these huge parties at the Breadbox (Mikey from the Surecut Kids' unit) every weekend and all sorts of stuff would be happening. Like neighbourhood kids would sneak in and steal our coronas, we'd have to stop people from 'getting it on' in my mate's bed, people would jump off the balcony just for a laugh... Oh and one morning a friend of ours woke up and stumbled to the toilet, saw there was vomit ALL OVER the room. Everywhere except in the bowl. And he was yelling out "Whoa someone ruined your toilet man!" and we had to inform him that he was the culprit. So then he was late for his first day at his new job because he was scrubbing vomit off the toilet walls haha good times!

We loved the tunes you guys sent over. Tell the readers a bit more about what to expect from you two, giving this is just a cross-section of your diverse tastes.

Haha glad you liked them! Well at the moment we are getting heavily into remixing. Remixing is our 'crack' haha! So we have just been picking some of our favourite tunes and giving them our own twist. Its a great way to separate ourselves from other people who do similar things you know? if you have a few exclusives up your sleeve its a point of difference. Oh and its an incredible feeling when a crowd gets buck-wild to something you have made, or when a dj you respect tells you they have been playing your tune. We dont want to box ourselves in to one particular style of production, because thats not how we play anyways. So our remixes never have to be a certain way, we just figure out what the track needs and then try and get there.

Dave Dobbyn - Slice of Heaven (Surecut Kids Remix)

It's the weekend and we are desperate to find you. Where are our highest chances?

We move around a bit depending on the weekend, but some pretty safe bets would be the front room at Uber, and Bread n Butter (on the Gold Coast). We just did a really fun show at Barsoma, thats probably my favourite Brisbane bar at the moment, its incredible! Oh and this Thursday we are doing a Fans night at Alhambra which should be crazy fun!

Sounds awesome, Alhambra is a cool place hey. Any highlights coming up in the future that you're looking forward too?

Well lately we have been starting to get our travel on. So we plan to keep that happening and do more shows in faraway lands. Hopefully just bigger and better until one day we can afford some large mansions to store our many leather-bound books in. And on the production tip, hopefully just keep learning and getting our tunes out there into the world. Whatever opportunities come our way, we just want to get our filthy mitts all over it haha!

Thanks guys, was good chatting. See you soon yeh?

Yeh thanks heaps! See you out on the town!
